Self catering holiday cottage, Porthgwarra

"Carn Scathe", is a large, traditional, terraced granite cottage in the fishing cove of Porthgwarra, just yards from the sea. It commands stunning views of the cove and the surrounding cliffs. The south west coastal path passes by the bottom of the garden. There is a delightful cafe in the cove. Porthgwarra is a haven for birdwatchers and the cafe often opens in the depths of winter when there are lots of rare birds around. It takes about twenty minutes to walk along the cliffs to the famous Minack Theatre and the fabulous beach at Porthchapel is a short walk away. Land's End and the sandy, surfing beach at Sennen Cove are just 3 miles away. This property can only be accessed on foot so it's not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.

An entry in the visitors books sums it up "park your car and no need to use it for a week - walks east and west to beautiful coves and bays - seals and basking sharks - the view from the terrace is totally absorbing"

Carn Scathe was completely refurbished in 2011. The ground floor has been remodelled to form an open plan kitchen/diner and the lounge is now twice its original size. All the bedrooms are now on the first floor.

Reviews

What can one say about the views - to take tea on the terrace watching Cornish choughs and seals - priceless.

Directions

When you reach Penzance stay on the A30 and follow the signs for Land's End. Approximately 3 miles outside Penzance take the left turn signposted to the Minack. Drive through St. Buryan and continue (watching out for the hairpin bend!). Ignore the turning to Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre but take the next left signposted Porthgwarra. Drive down into the valley and at the bottom of the hill on the right you will see parking for 3 cars - one of these spaces is marked up for Carn Scathe. If you go past the beach cafe you have gone too far! You will see a small track near the car parking space going towards the sea. Walk down this, past Cove Cottage and turn left and walk up the path. Bear right and you will then see a blue garden gate. Go through this and up through the garden to the front door for Carn Scathe, which is the middle house in the terrace of 3. You might be able to pull the car up to where the path starts in order to unload - this isn't strictly allowed but lots of people do it! A slightly easier access can be found by turning left, back up the hill from the parking space, then immediately right along a path by the first house and then bear right to end up in front of the terrace of houses.
