Carn Scathe: 4-Bedroom Holiday Cottage

Porthgwarra near Porthcurno, Land's End, West Cornwall

Self catering holiday cottage, Porthgwarra

"Carn Scathe", is a large, traditional, terraced granite cottage in Porthgwarra, just yards from the sea. It commands stunning views of the cove and the surrounding cliffs - this is the same cove where Aidan Turner went swimming in the TV series Poldark. The south west coastal path passes by the bottom of the garden. It takes about twenty minutes to walk along the cliffs to the famous Minack Theatre and the fabulous beach at Porthchapel is a short walk away. Land's End and the sandy, surfing beach at Sennen Cove are just 3 miles away.

At certain times of year, there are reduced prices for parties of 4 or less - this is shown clearly on the availability page.  It is so nice to welcome so many regular guests returning, year after year.

Porthgwarra is a remote and picturesque sandy cove  - it was once a fishing village but few boats now launch from the hamlet. Basking sharks and dolphins can often be seen in the waters.

The cove and slipway are privately owned but the public are allowed access. Folklore has it that the tunnel from the slipway towards the road was used by smugglers - the more mundane explanation is that it was excavated by tin miners from St Just to allow farmers to gather seaweed from the beach by horse & cart - seaweed is an excellent fertiliser.

A second tunnel, leading seawards, was the fishermen's access to the tidal 'hulleys' built in the rocks to store shellfish. The 'hulleys', which ceased being used about 20 years ago, had wooden floors and topcovers with trapdoors and were used to store shellfish prior to taking the catch to market once or twice a week. The rope laid down the beach is used to steady boats while landing.

Porthgwarra is a mecca for birdwatchers. Both seabirds and rare 'landbirds' feature in an impressive list of rarities seen at Porthgwarra.

The cafe is open in the summer and caters for the large amount of people walking along the coastal path and the birdwatchers, many of whom go to see the migrant birds, particularly in October.

Reasons to choose this property:

  • Fabulous views of the sea and cliffs
  • Beautiful beaches within easy walking distance
  • Adjacent to the coastal path
  • 2 minute walk from the cove
  • Large garden with BAR B Q
  • One allocated parking space with the opportunity to pay at the cafe for more, if needed

What can one say about the views - to take tea on the terrace watching Cornish choughs and seals - priceless.

Park your car and no need to use it for a week - walks east and west to beautiful coves and bays - seals and basking sharks - the view from the terrace is totally absorbing

A memorable and special holiday with a total of 19 family members staying in the Cove

Freshly caught mackerel on the BAR B Q and Pimms on the terrace - we could not ask for more

Bracing November swims at Porthchapel, a Smugglers Moon over Porthgwarra and several rounds of Bananagrams - a lovely half term break

When you reach Penzance stay on the A30 and follow the signs for Land's End. Approximately 3 miles outside Penzance take the left turn signposted to the Minack. Drive through St. Buryan and continue (watching out for the hairpin bend!). Ignore the turning to Porthcurno and the Minack Theatre but take the next left signposted Porthgwarra. Drive down into the valley and round to the car park.  You will see a small track near the cafe going towards the sea. Walk down this, past Cove Cottage and turn left and walk up the path. Bear right and you will then see a blue garden gate. Go through this and up through the garden to the front door for Carn Scathe, which is the middle house in the terrace of 3. A slightly easier access can be found by turning left, back up the hill away from the sea, then immediately right along a path by the first house (Rowe's Cottage) and then bear right to end up in front of the terrace of houses.
